Gerunds

Hello, guys!

Another interesting lesson I learned today in my English class was about gerunds. I learned that a gerund is the -ing form of a verb that functions as a noun in a sentence.

Examples of gerunds:

- swimming

- reading

- walking

- painting

- running

- playing

- running

- working

Here are ways on how to use gerunds in sentences:

Gerunds as Subjects:

- Singing is my favorite hobby.

- Watching video makes me happy.

- Reading helps you learn.

Gerunds as Objects:

- She enjoys painting.

- They like running.

- He loves singming.

Gerunds after Prepositions:

- He is interested in learning.

- They talked about traveling.

- He is good at cooking.

Gerunds in compound nouns:

- A diving board is essential for a pool.

- A talking doll is fascinating.

Note: Gerunds are not the same as present participles, which are used in continuous tenses.

CONVERSATION 1:

Nut: Waiting for food in long lines can be frustrating sometimes.

Tor: I agree. Choosing a meal quickly is sometimes hard for me.

Nut: Sharing food with friends makes dinner more enjoyable, though.

Tor: That’s true. Planning meals ahead of time could save us time.

Nut: You’re right. Cooking at home is healthier, too.

Tor: For me, buying food here is more supermarket.

Nut: By the way, trying the steak today might be a good idea.

Tor: That’s true. Ordering dessert afterward could be nice as well.

CONVERSATION 2:

Choose the gerund in the following conversation. Color them red.:

Scenario: Two friends talking about their hobbies

Cartoon: Hey, Sarah! I heard you’ve started singing recently. How is it going?

Tor: It’s amazing! Singing helps me relax after work. What about you?

Cartoon: I’ve been enjoying running in the mornings. It’s refreshing.

Tor: That sounds great! I’ve always loved running, too. Do you listen to music while running?

Cartoon: Sometimes, but I prefer listening to podcasts. Learning new things while exercising is fun.

Tor: I agree! Learning keeps the mind sharp. Have you tried cooking new recipes lately?

Cartoon: Yes! Cooking is my new passion. It’s so rewarding to create delicious meals.

Tor: That’s wonderful! I think cooking and singing make life more colorful, don’t you?
